Each pair consisted of a right tibia that was fixed using a standard two-cannulated screw fixation and a left tibia that was fixed with a two-cannulated screw fixation with the addition of a high-strength interlocking nail. Fracture fixation was performed by a single surgeon using a standardized technique. A load was applied to the anterior part of the tibiae until failure occurred. A statistically significant difference was found in mean maximum load to failure between the cannulated screw and the cannulated screw with interlocking nail groups (257.9+/-60.2 N vs 418.1+/-76.5 N, respectively). A mean stiffness was also significantly different between the two fixation techniques (51.7+/-8.6 N/mm vs 70.6+/-10.4 N/mm, respectively).
